Bon Voyage March by Karl L. King; arr. Norman F. Rowe
Karl L. King was twenty-four years old when he penned "Bon Voyage" in 1915. At that time he served as bandmaster with the Sells-Floto/Buffalo Bill Circus. The dedication reads "To My Band" so presumably he wrote it for the SF/BBC band. The significance of the title has apparently been lost. King utilized the German tune "How Can I Leave Thee" by C. Cramer in the final strain. The United States Military Academy (West Point) and Washington University adopted this melody for their "Alma Maters."
The arrangements retins the original melodies and harmonies, updates and expands the instrumentation, and provides mre variety in voicings than did the original. This is not an attempt to recreate original performance practice, but an exciting rejuvenation of this King march.
