Composed for solo pianoforte in 1844, Heinrich dedicated the work "To His Excellency John Tyler, President of the United States," hoping to encourage President Tyler to grant him government patronage. The march was scored for piano with an incidental piccolo entrance in the final four bars. This piece is a formal concert march rather than one to use for a parade (not that one would parade down the street with a piano!). President Tyler declined to provide government funding for Heinrich's compositional endeavors (vetoed the idea), so in response Heinrich composed and published the satirical mock-heroic "Tyler's Grand Veto Quick Step" (originally for piano, also now arranged for band - (TMP950090), the Quick Step being a popular two-step ballroom dance at the time.
