Crater Lake Centennial March Norman F. Rowe
The celebration of the centennial of Crater Lake National Park closed on Sunday, August 25, 2002, and was marked by an afternoon of performances and speeches. This march was composed for that event and is dedicated to the Park and its Superintendent, Charles Lundy, in honor of that milestone. The beauty of the landmark cannot truly be captured in music, but the open expanse of the caldera inspired the opening "Crater Lake" strain. The second strain salutes the efforts, some even on a "heroic" level, of the men and women of the National Park Service in developing, preserving, and protecting this awesome area of land and water. The name "Wizard Island" conjures up thoughts of sorcery, and hints of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas and "Uranus" from The Planets by Gustav Holst portray these images in the opening strain of the Trio. The break-up strain attempts to portray a bit of the explosive powers that formed the features found at Crater Lake. Present are the rumbling and quaking of the ground and the spewing forth of fire, smoke, ash, and lava. The final strain combines the "Crater Lake" theme from the opening strain with the "Wizard Island" theme (depicting Wizard Island inside Crater Lake) to bring the march to a close.
