Crater Lake March by Edward Charles Root; arr. Norman F. Rowe
Charles Edward Root (1880-1962) composed the "Crater Lake March" for piano in 1916. Root spent many years as a music teacher and music store proprietor in the Medford, Oregon, area. Situated in the Rogue River Valley, only a short distance from Crater Lake National Park, he felt this nearby national landmark was worthy of a musical composition.
In 2002 Crater Lake National Park celebrated its centennial. The Ashland City Band (of Ashland, Oregon, located about 15 miles south of Medford) received an invitation to perform for the main celebration on August 25, 2002. In preparing for this event, the organizers approached Don Bieghler, director of the Ashland City Band, and requested that the band perform it during the festivities. Upon discovering it was only a piano piece, he asked ACB euphonium player Norman Rowe to arrange it for the band. The arrangement was completed in short order and performed during the centennial celebration.
